Earth Science Women's Network (ESWN)

Mission:

The Earth Science Women’s Network (ESWN) connects women in the Earth sciences to promote career development, build community, provide informal mentoring and support, and facilitate professional collaborations.

Past, Present, and Future:

ESWN informally took shape in 2002, at an AGU reception organized by Tracey Holloway, Meredith G. Hastings, and Arlene Fiore, where Becky Alexander, Amanda Staudt, and Allison Steiner were all in attendance. Among the six of us, there were pre-existing friendships and collaborations, but together we formed a cadre of early career scientists with similar interests and goals. We all enjoyed interacting with one another, connecting on specific research topics, as well as broader issues in work, family and life. Recognizing the benefits of this informal peer network, we began exchanging emails, slowly adding additional friends and colleagues to the list, who in turn added their friends and colleagues. Now, less than four years later, we have ~130 women on our email list with over 45 different affiliations. We run an ESWN listserv through the National Center for Atmospheric Research, which serves as a way for our members to establish connections, share job announcements, discuss professional life, find roommates for meetings, and organize get-togethers at conferences. Through the listserv and informal gatherings during annual conferences (AGU, ASLO and AMS), ESWN serves as a clearinghouse for connecting women across all facets of the earth sciences.

We would like to continue to increase participation in the future and establish more formal opportunities for our members to interact. Our goals include: launching a website, coordinating mentor relationships, and hosting workshops and get-togethers to promote successful career building for women in the Earth sciences.
